Thanksgiving? I think not

Well, Thanksgiving has come and gone...and I survived it all. At Thanksgiving, my uncle told us that Americans eat more on this one day than they do on any other day of the year. Of course, I might have to argue that Valentine's Day for single women might be vying for that top spot, at least on ice cream intake. But in all seriousness, feasting and overeating is really all this holiday is about. I don't recall anyone in either of my family get togethers even saying "Happy Thanksgiving" or talking at all about that for which we were thankful. I actually had to spend a good chunk of my time listening to talk of OSU football, and anyone who knows me, should know that it was definitely not my idea of good conversation.

My goodness, when Americans set out to ruin a perfectly good holiday, we do it in full force. So, I've decided to officially ban Thanksgiving as a holiday. I've always talked about my dislike for it, but I'm completely serious now. No more. Cranberry sauce will no longer be a once a year treat. I'm stocking up and eating it in April. Well, maybe not, because having it on hand that long kind of creeps me out, but you get the idea. Consider this my way of rebelling against the commercialization of things that were once meaningful.

Trying to Live like Cinderella

So, for the past week, I've been asleep before midnight. Granted, this was with the help of Nyquil (because I've been sick), but coming from the girl who has had some major sleeping issues in her life, it's seriously amazing!! It's also pretty unbelieveable. Last night after 180, I came home, washed some dishes, got in bed, and fell asleep before 11:30.

Now, as you can imagine, going to sleep consistently for 5 nights in a row has been really great for me. And not only that, I'm going to bed early. For those of you who don't think that midnight is early, you have no idea what nighttime usually looks like for me. In my head I'm thinking, "this is great! I'm going to start sleeping normally for once in my life, and feel refreshed when I wake up!" But what I hadn't remembered was that I have been taking Nyquil this whole week to aid me in having a full night's rest. Tonight is the first time that I haven't taken Nyquil, trusting that my starting to yawn at 11:30 was a good sign. What I hadn't counted on was my mind's intense ability to stay up long after my body was ready for sleep. If you check the posting time, you'll see that it's 1:30 currently, and I feel as though I could easily stay up for another hour. So much for establishing a routine.

Tomorrow's another night. Maybe my mind and body will get together and figure something out that would be beneficial to both.

Modern Medicine

I'd like to take some time to talk to you about the wonders of Dayquil. I've had a cold for a solid week now, and it's been showing no signs of improvement. It's really irritating me, because I really don't like being sick. Not that other people actually enjoy being sick, but it really just messes up my life.

Last week I took Dayquil in pill form. It took about two hours to even take effect, and then it only lasted about an hour maximum. So, frustrated with the whole thing, I took a few days of of the meds, thinking that my body would be getting better after four or so days of the cold. Well, the whole weekend passed, and I'm still feeling subpar. So, I broke down and bought some dayquil, but in liquid form this time. Pretty much immediately after I took it, I felt better, and my symptoms were relieved. And it wasn't until the full four hours later that I even started feeling sick again. So, my recommendation is to always buy Dayquil in the liquid form, even though it doesn't taste all that great. It's so much better than the pills! And in a few hours, I'll be taking Nyquil. I hope that it has the powerful sleeping techniques that I've heard so much about.

An Athenian Paradox

So, as you may or may not know, Halloween in Athens is kind of a big deal. There's this block party on Court Street that some people go to, okay everyone and their mom goes to it. No, I'm actually being serious about that comment....no joke. The block party happened this past Saturday evening. So, I spent all last week getting things ready for the Campus Crusade alternative party that we held in the Ping Center, which was a rounding success. But it was also extremely exhausting, especially since I'm not at all a fan of Halloween.
On Sunday, I was lounging around the house in my favorite flannel shirt, so completely excited that Halloween was done. I decided to watch a movie on tv, because as we all know, Sunday tv movies are pretty great. Well, on every channel, they were showing some sort of Halloween movie. I thought to myself, "the tv people are crazy because Halloween is totally over. Why are they still showing Halloween movies?" Then I realized that, Halloween, in fact, hadn't even occurred yet. It was still two whole days away. And I found that completely bizarre. To Athens, Halloween was over, completely done, but to the rest of the world, the anticipation for costumes and candy was still imminent. For all of you who have lived in Athens, you know exactly what I'm talking about.

This has been yet another example of why living in Athens really is like living in a bubble.

What a Great Start

Fitting with the current theme of my site, is today's story for you.

I was walking to campus for staff study, minding my own business. And being typical Athenian fall weather, it had been raining in the morning. But about halfway to campus, I confidently closed my umbrella because the rain had stopped. Well, this was probably not the best decision for me because about a minute later, a car comes zooming by, and proceeds to drive through a giant puddle that of course splashed all over me, thoroughly soaking my left side, as well as my backpack.

Now, the only redeeming factor to this story is that I layered my outfit this morning to accomodate the changing temperature. Thankfully, I was able to take off my outer shirt for the duration of my two hours in the library to allow it to dry off. The downside to that, lies in that, two hours later, my shirt is still not dry. So now I have to put on a damp, gross feeling shirt and suffer through it for the rest of the day until it decides to dry out completely.

Lesson to learn from this experience- even if it's no longer raining, keep your umbrella at the ready! You never know from which direction an onslaught of water will strike!
